Animals are cute, but c’mon

Okay, so I’m just a little frustrated today, and I have to get it out. I applied for a grant for Project Zero through the Pepsi Refresh Project. It seems like an incredible opportunity; they have given out lots of funding for lots of great ideas. We got word a few weeks ago that we had made it through the first phase and would find out on December 1 if we had made it through to the voting stage.

I was so pumped and just knew we would get to the voting stage, I mean what could be better that finding homes for children languishing in the broken foster care system. Apparently, lots of things. I found out today that Project Zero did not make it. Bummer. Then I read the ideas that did make it. Granted some of them were wonderful, and original. But face it, lots of them were, well, about animals. Now before I get roasted by all you animal lovers, I love animals too. We have two beautiful Golden Retrievers and I love them. But not as much as I love my kids.

I am always so amazed at how much air time abused animals get on television stations in our city. Almost every night. And yet, we have to beg and fight to get regular media attention about a plight that has more far reaching deep repercussions; a plight that is gripping our nation and has a life of it’s own, yet sometimes it seems dormant in the media: the plight of abused and neglected kids….kids who need the message spread loud and clear; who need to be heard.

Honestly, God will bring the funds we need for Project Zero in whatever way He chooses. He doesn’t need the Pepsi Refresh Project or anything else. I just wish, and hope and pray that our country will see the light and give foster kids a voice; strong, loud and persuasive. It’s time. Then we can tackle the animal problems.

  1. Amen sister ! I totally agree with you. I have a dog too, but sorry she never came before any of my children. I love my dog, but children are a priceless treasure that deserve so much more than being stuck in a broken system through no fault of their own!
    Shame on Pepsi!

  2. I don’t think this is an either or thing. I mean, really neither animals nor children should be homeless or abused. Or the elderly or any living thing for that matter. The point is more that foundations consider a lot of things when distributing funds–not just worthiness of cause. Maybe this shouldn’t be the system, but it is. Instead of playing, who needs/deserves help more, it is probably more productive to agitate for a society/culture/world where wealth is redistributed in shuch a way that ALL worthy causes have enough.
